On 10 September 2026, H.E. Mrs. Sirilak Niyom, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, welcomed a delegation of Members of Parliament and Senators of Malaysia at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The delegation is visiting Thailand from 10 to 12 September 2026 under a programme organised by the Royal Thai Embassy in Kuala Lumpur to strengthen networks among Malaysian political leaders, now in its third year, under the theme "Connecting Strengths, Creating Opportunities: Thailand – Malaysia Parliamentary Engagement for a Shared Future". H.E. Ms. Lada Phumas, Ambassador of Thailand to Malaysia, also joined the meeting.

 

The two sides exchanged views on advancing Thailand – Malaysia relations across a range of areas. The Deputy Permanent Secretary highlighted the momentum at leaders' level, which has translated into concrete progress, particularly following the official visit of the Prime Minister of Thailand to Malaysia on 9 – 10 July 2026 and the working visit of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs to Malaysia on 6 – 7 September 2026. Malaysia is Thailand's largest trading partner in ASEAN, and the two countries have set a bilateral trade target of 30 billion US dollars by 2027. The two sides also discussed cross-border connectivity along both the eastern and western corridors, border security, and the development of southern Thailand and northern Malaysia, where the two peoples share close cultural, religious and family ties.

 

Both sides underlined the role of the legislative branch in building understanding and trust between the two peoples. Thailand will host the 16th Meeting of the Thailand – Malaysia Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation (JC) and the 7th Ministerial Meeting of the Thailand – Malaysia Committee on Joint Development Strategy for Border Areas (JDS) in October 2026 in Bangkok. The two countries will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2027.
